Enlightened and Benefitted through Mother’s Group
Deprived of any kind of awareness about health care during pregnancy, personal hygiene & sanitation, or nutrition, Urmila Pariyar was about to give birth to her first baby
Urmila lives in Ward No. 6 of Bhotenamlang VDC, Sindhupalchowk. Urmila was not at all prepared for health related consequences before and after child-birth. One of the most important and accessible sources is mothers group. As she was a member of the mothers group in her VDC, she became informed about the importance of ANC/PNC visits, nutrition, danger signs of pregnancy, birth preparedness plan and the significance of institutional delivery.
UPAKAR Project encourages Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) to activate dormant mothers groups and provide each group with a sum of NPR 4,000 (tent. CHF 36) as Emergency Obstetric Care (EOC) fund, which is a revolving fund, to be given and utilized by a mother who is most in need of it and she will have to return the money to the group within 3 months.Urmila was also given the EOC fund to support her during delivery. She went for institutional delivery and gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
